A fast, heavy display italic for powersports and racing graphics: straight-edged capitals with a plate cut, speed slices trailing every letter, a stencil cut, a Speed trail layer that overprints Black exactly, and an upright Utility Condensed.
- Seven cuts: Regular, Bold and Black Italic, Stencil Italic, Speed Italic (a trail layer printed under Black) and two weights of an upright Utility Condensed.
- Features: kern, mark/mkmk, ccmp, case, tnum, zero, ss01 (race-number plate figures), ss02 (solid forms without slices), ss03 (alternates a R Q M y), sups/subs/sinf/numr/dnom, dlig (arrows and chevrons).
- Latin only: Basic Latin, Latin-1, Latin Extended-A, Romanian comma-below letters, punctuation, currency, arrows, chevrons, triangles and flags.
- Unhinted prototype with straight-segment outlines only; the slices are meant for 40 px and up; not offered for redistribution.
From Origin: kickspray/README.md, kickspray/DESIGN-BRIEF.md
Known limitations
- Every outline is straight-edged: bowls are octagonal by design, so there are no curves to refine; at very large sizes the chamfers read as geometry, not as drawn rounds.
- Slices and stencil gaps split glyphs into several contours (fontbakery contour_count warns and Speed trail contours differ from Black); below roughly 40 px the Black and Bold slits fill in, so use ss02 or Utility there.
- The italic is the only slope of the display cuts. The skeleton is drawn upright then leaned 13 degrees about y=300; the italic-specific forms are the single-storey a and g, the t and f crossbars, the plate-cut corners and the slice rows, not a second redraw of every letter.
- Speed trails run left of the advance (up to 420 units beyond it): containers that clip overflow will crop the first trails. Speed registers only with Black (Stencil, Regular, Bold have different advances).
- Speed is not a colour font (no COLR): two stacked text layers are needed. A few tiny residual nubs remain at the ends of some trails.
- ss01 plate figures differ from the default figures only modestly (tabular width, a footed 1, slightly heavier stems); they are not a separate race-number design.
- Stencil only opens glyphs that have counters; letters without islands (E F T L S ...) are unchanged from Black.
- ss02 does not exist in the Utility cuts (they have no slices) and ss03 there swaps the other way (Utility's default a is double-storey; ss03 gives the single-storey one).
- Kerning is measured from geometry and verified on sample pairs with HarfBuzz; there was no hand optical pass on accented capitals, ß, fractions or most punctuation. Letters, figures, special letters and 23 punctuation marks are kerned; accented letters follow their base.
- Not tuned for: Windows GDI aliased rendering (unhinted), Greek, Cyrillic, Vietnamese (no stacked marks), all-caps tracking tables (use case and add letter-spacing).
- fontbakery: universal and opentype profiles have 1 FAIL in each (opentype/STAT/ital_axis, missing-roman: the display family is italic-only by design) and the waived warnings listed in README.md.
The designer's own list, copied unchanged from the font's hand-off manifest.
