The loud sibling of Dioptra, for 48 px and up. One lens cut per letter, tilted 14 degrees like the text face's facet: the band above the cut slides along it and is drawn lighter. Shift and Echo are layer cuts that stack on Regular in CSS.

  • Display face for 48 px and up (the slit is about 1 px at 48 px and the lens shift reads from about 40 px). Not for text.
  • Regular, Italic (drawn), Bold and Bold Italic, plus a Shift and an Echo layer for each. Shift and Echo have the same advances, kerning and vertical metrics as Regular: set the same text three times in the same box and colour the layers. This page ships the Shift and Echo layers of Regular and Bold; the Italic layers are in the hand-off folder.
  • Shift is the lens band mirrored (its fringe never overlaps Regular); Echo is an inline contour in the ink plus a loop inside every counter. Shift and Echo contain only letter, figure and large-symbol geometry (punctuation and accents are drawn by Regular alone).
  • ss01 nested counters (a loop inside each counter), ss02 mirrored cut, ss03 flat terminals, ss04 lens shift off (slit only), ss05 solid (no cut), ss06 the other storey of a. calt mirrors the second letter of a doubled pair (oo, ee, ll).
  • Latin only: Basic Latin, Latin-1, Latin Extended-A, Vietnamese and Romanian letters, punctuation, currency, arrows, math basics. Unhinted prototype; not offered for redistribution.

Known limitations

  • Display only: below about 40 px the slit closes up and the lens band reads as noise; use Dioptra for anything smaller. ss05 (solid) is the legible fallback at 32 to 48 px.
  • The cut is a slice of a finished letter, not a redrawing: where the slit meets diagonals (M W w v y k x) it leaves small separate shards of the top band, and each slit height is chosen per glyph within 60 units of 0.66 x-height or 0.74 cap height to dodge bars, so the line of slits undulates slightly from letter to letter.
  • Shift and Echo hold geometry only for glyphs that carry the lens (letters, figures, large symbols). Punctuation, accents and small symbols are drawn by the Regular layer alone. fontbakery fails contour_count (no-contour) and win descent on the layer cuts for that reason (see qa/WAIVERS.md).
  • ss01 to ss05 apply to letters, figures and their accented forms (not to smcp, onum, tnum, sups forms); tnum and onum run first and leave those figures in the default cut. ss01 rings are skipped in counters that would leave less than 0.55 stem of opening.
  • Alternates are measured against the default advance box: their spacing is the default's, so mirrored (ss02, calt) and solid forms are a little looser or tighter than a hand-spaced alternate would be. calt doubled pairs have an added exception only where the Regular outlines would otherwise come within the collision floor.
  • Echo is a hairline-scale inline (about 10 units wide in Regular): at 48 px it is about half a pixel and reads as a tint, not a line. It is meant for 96 px and up.
  • Skeleton weaknesses inherited from Dioptra: the t foot, y and j tails are generic, and the ampersand, section sign (blobby), pilcrow, eszett, brace and diagonal-arrow glyphs are first drafts.
  • Unhinted TrueType; the file is large for a display face (about 330 KB Regular, 550 KB Echo as TTF) because every letter exists up to six times (default and five alternates).
  • Latin only. The name was checked by web search only; no clearance.

The designer's own list, copied unchanged from the font's hand-off manifest.
